Introducing STEP: Supported Transitions and Education Program

Writer: Iris ClubhouseIris Clubhouse

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our new Supported Transitions and Education Program: STEP. This program is designed for members who are interested in pursuing education as a key part of their vocational goals. STEP provides essential information and strategies to help members set clear academic and professional objectives beyond the community college experience. In the beginning of this month as part of our official launch we started a member led college preparatory course that will guide members as they navigate the prospect of entering college in the fall.

A Step Toward Success: The Supported Transitions and Education Program (STEP)

The Iris Clubhouse is proud to introduce the Supported Transitions and Education Program (STEP), a vital initiative designed to help our members integrate education into their long-term vocational goals. Education can be a powerful tool for empowerment, stability, and career advancement, but for many adults living with mental illness, the pathway to higher education can seem daunting. STEP provides the guidance, resources, and community support necessary to help our members successfully pursue their academic aspirations.

STEP is built upon SAMHSA’s evidence-based Supported Education model, ensuring that participants receive structured, practical support tailored to their individual needs. This program is not just about getting into college—it’s about building the skills and confidence necessary to navigate the educational system successfully and use education as a stepping stone to greater independence.

At the heart of STEP is our Pre-College Preparatory Course, a member-led initiative co-taught by a dedicated staff member and an experienced Clubhouse peer. This course helps members explore:

  • Credit transfers and college policies – Understanding the rules and processes that govern higher education institutions.

  • Career exploration and strategic planning – Aligning academic pursuits with long-term career goals.

  • Critical thinking and effective communication skills – Essential tools for success in the classroom and beyond.

  • Insights on senior institutions of higher education – Preparing for a seamless transition to four-year universities or technical programs.

Education plays a pivotal role in achieving economic stability, meaningful employment, and self-sufficiency. However, many individuals with mental illness experience systemic barriers such as financial constraints, lack of academic support, and stigma. STEP aims to break down these barriers by offering practical support, including financial aid navigation, academic coaching, and access to essential resources like technology, study spaces, and transportation assistance.

The launch of STEP represents a significant step forward for the Iris Clubhouse community. By fostering an environment where members feel supported in their educational journeys, we are not only enhancing individual lives but also strengthening our community as a whole. The ultimate goal of STEP is to help participants set and achieve academic milestones, whether that means completing a certificate program, earning a degree, or successfully transferring to a senior institution.

We believe that education should be accessible to everyone, and through STEP, we are ensuring that our members have the tools they need to succeed. As we continue to grow this initiative, we welcome community partners and supporters to help us expand access to education and create more opportunities for those we serve.
