Advocacy in Action

Writer: Iris ClubhouseIris Clubhouse

At the Iris Clubhouse, advocacy is not just about raising awareness—it’s about creating real change. Through direct engagement with policymakers, community leaders, and stakeholders, we work to ensure that people living with mental illness have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. This year, our advocacy efforts have taken us to both city and state levels, demonstrating the power of lived experience and community-driven solutions.

Representing Mental Health at the Capitol

In January, the director and board chair of the Iris Clubhouse traveled to Cheyenne to participate in the Nonprofit Breakfast hosted by the Wyoming Nonprofit Network. This event provided an opportunity to connect with lawmakers and discuss the challenges faced by those living with mental illness in our community. We spoke about the importance of funding for mental health programs, the need for accessible resources, and the impact of supported employment and education initiatives like our newly launched STEP program.

Advocacy at the state level is critical. By meeting with legislators, we can share firsthand experiences of how our programs change lives and advocate for policies that support recovery, education, and employment opportunities for individuals with mental illness. Our presence at the Capitol reinforced the need for a continued investment in community-based mental health services and partnerships that promote long-term stability.

A Voice at City Council

In February, we took our advocacy efforts to the local level by attending a Casper City Council meeting. One of our dedicated members, Sally, bravely shared her personal journey and the transformative role the Clubhouse and the STEP program have played in her life. Her testimony highlighted the importance of educational and employment programs for individuals with mental illness, helping to shift perceptions and encourage city officials to consider further support for mental health initiatives.

When our members speak, decision-makers listen. Sally’s story resonated with those in attendance, sparking meaningful discussions about the need for stronger community support systems. This type of advocacy not only strengthens our relationships with local leaders but also empowers our members to take an active role in shaping the future of mental health services in our city.

The Power of Collective Advocacy

Advocacy does not happen in isolation. It requires collaboration, persistence, and a commitment to lifting the voices of those often unheard. By engaging in these efforts, we are not only advocating for funding and policy changes but also working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Looking ahead, the Iris Clubhouse will continue to participate in advocacy events, build partnerships with organizations like the Wyoming Nonprofit Network, and seek opportunities to engage with policymakers at all levels. Our goal is to ensure that every person living with mental illness has access to the resources and support they need to lead fulfilling lives.

Want to get involved? Join us in our advocacy efforts by staying informed, attending public meetings, and sharing your story. Together, we can make a lasting impact on mental health policies and community support systems.
